During my trip to Kochi, Kerala, I had the opportunity to paint one of the most iconic and historic sights of Fort Kochi—the traditional Chinese fishing nets.

As an Indian watercolor artist and plein air artist, painting this particular subject had been an ultimate desire of mine. There is something incredibly captivating about these enormous fishing nets, their unique wooden structures, and the fishermen who continue to use them as part of a tradition that has become deeply connected with the identity of Fort Kochi.

I painted this Kochi painting directly at the location, surrounded by the atmosphere of Fort Kochi—the movement of the fishermen, the changing light, the water, and the timeless character of Kerala. Watching the fishermen patiently lower and raise the nets while I painted was an incredibly pleasurable and memorable experience.

For me, this is much more than a Chinese fishing net painting. It is a personal memory of Kerala, captured in watercolor while standing right there in Fort Kochi. Plein air painting allows me to experience a place more deeply, and this painting became my way of preserving that moment, the light, the people, and the cultural heritage of Kochi.

This original watercolor art is part of my journey as a plein air artist, documenting places, people, and everyday life through watercolor.
